Popping’s most popular origin story credits the genre’s creation to Fresno’s Sam Solomon, aka, Boogaloo Sam. Origin stories are tricky on the one hand they provide an easily digestible narrative that pinpoints a specific starting point on the other hand, however, they often over-simplify complex histories or otherwise obscure conflicting details and alternative origins. By the time kids in Kenosha, Wisconsin marveled at Pop N’ Taco’s spastic, yet simultaneously fluid, dance routines in the film “Breakin’” or even Michael Jackson’s flawless execution of the backslide 3 during his “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever” performance, they were bearing witness to a dance whose kinetic genealogy was rooted not in the Bronx or Hollywood, but in Fresno. Historian Robert Farris Thompson describes popping as: “rhythmic angulations of the torso and limbs executed at a moderate tempo if one is poppin’ or very fast if one is tickin’.” 1 Pioneering popper, Timothy Solomon aka Pop’in Pete offers a more direct definition when he says popping is “hittin’ your joints, hittin’ hard with your leg, your neck, your head.” 2 Contemporary popping encompasses a range of movements, steps and styles including boogaloo, animation, ticking, strutting, roboting, strobing, tutting to name a few the common denominator in these styles is the fluid “popping” or “htting” of the joints and muscles. However, these various attempts to popularize and commodify breakdancing typically missed a crucial point, namely, that breakdancing was actually an amalgam of various dance styles, each with their own distinct histories and geographic contexts. In the ensuing breakdancing craze that spread across the nation, morning news show profile pieces, suburban dance studios and even an episode of the sitcom “Silver Spoons,” similarly depicted breakdancing as a unified dance genre no different than the waltz or the tango. However, even when Breaksploitation films depicted authentic representations of popping (which they did not always do), they created the impression that popping was simply a particular set of steps under the broader breakdancing umbrella. “Breaksploitation” films, as they became collectively known, like “Beat Street,” “Breakin’” and “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo,” featured actual poppers like Bruno “Pop N' Taco” Falcon and Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers showing off the dance’s characteristic pops, ticks, jerks, and spasms. Popping first entered national consciousness on the backs of a series of mid-1980s Hollywood breakdancing films. However, popping is unique because its roots trace back not to quintessential deindustrializing communities like the Bronx or South Los Angles but to the capital of California’s breadbasket, Fresno. Like many street dance styles, popping is a product of working class youth of color making the most of limited resources. At its best, popping is a time-lapsed spasm or a stop-motion convulsion highlighting intricate movements in even the tiniest muscles. As its name suggests, popping is a dance style defined by the popping of one’s muscles and joints. Because of the free versions limitations, it should really only be used with the paid version. You really must jump on the bandwagon if you haven’t. I vow to read it the day it comes out, rather than wait 2-3 months like I did this time. I love Pandemonium, Lauren Oliver, and Leena. :P This book gives me high blood pressure.Īll in all, AMAZING. I waited over a month to write this review, hoping I’d be able to eloquently explain my thoughts and organize my feelings. SO many questions are floating around in my head.ġ0. I was scared, I was thrilled, I was happy, sad, excited, confused, mad, devastated, etc. And then when it does, it shoves you back into your chair with a force greater than gravity itself. This book is a roller coaster that you never want to end. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I went through every single emotion. This also helped me remember what happened in Delirium, because as we all know by now… I waited way too long (so much longer than necessary) to read this.ĩ. The chapters alternate between “then” and “now”, so there are absolutely no gaps between the end of Delirium and the beginning of Pandemonium. I particularly enjoyed the layout of this book. Of course, Lauren Oliver’s writing is as stunningly heartwrenching (and heartwarming at the same time) as always. Leena’s new friends/family in the Wilds are very interesting to read about, especially when we get to learn the reasons they are in the Wilds now. WHERE IS ALEX!?! I’m loving the new Leena.ħ. She yearns for him always, just like I do. Her entire life became almost pointless at the end of Delirium, and she fled to the Wilds to try and start a new life… without Alex. Leena has transformed from this scared little girl to a confident, rebellious, determined, strong person. Anyway, my next point will get more specific, so quit reading here if reason 2 in this point (you have not read Delirium yet… or Pandemonium, I suppose) applies to you.Ħ. My thoughts are not terribly organized, clearly. If you haven’t read it yet, it’s because you have not read Delirium yet (because if you’ve read Delirium, why would you wait THIS long like me?) and I don’t want to spoil anything for you. You’ve read it, since I’m the last person in the world to have done so. I realize I’m not telling you much about the book itself, but that’s because 1. I actually closed the book and mumbled “ cliffhanger” over and over again, in a sort of glazed over stupor. I need to stop reading her books on a cruise ship.Ĥ. I knew she’d mess with my emotions and stir up all these questions inside of me before throwing me off a cliff and making me wait for a YEAR to find out what’s going to happen next!!! And you know what? I was RIGHT. I think another reason I waited so long to read this is because I just KNEW Lauren Oliver would try to kill me again. After my first “point”, I’ve come to realize that this review may not be as organized as I had hoped.ģ. Not so with Pandemonium! Maybe I waited so long to read this because I was worried we’d have another “New Moon” or “Catching Fire”? I don’t know. Most “trilogies” should not be trilogies, as book number 2 is usually a lackluster bridge to the final book. I usually hate the middle book in a trilogy. I’m, like, the last person in the world to read this, so I don’t really see a reason to work at summarizing it. I KNOW! Why did I wait so long!? The torture. Jana, Delirium nearly pushed you over the edge. I know, right? Jana, this book came out in FEBRUARY. Ahhhhhhhhh! I KNOW!!!! I FINALLY took the time to read this book. Phew! Here goes! (Remember, my main points are bolded, as always!ġ. I went through every single emotion, and as I write this review I know I will probably fan-girl, keyboard smash, get mad, get excited, swoon a little, want to hug someone, sigh, and probably write and re-write it numerous times before pressing the “publish” button. It can be applied to a field when creating a table. The AUTOINCREMENT keyword can be used with INTEGER PRIMARY KEY field only. In SQLite, a column with type INTEGER PRIMARY KEY is an alias for the ROWID (except in WITHOUT ROWID tables) which is always a 64-bit signed integer. specified table name: specified table name means the actual table name that we need to create. The SQLite AUTOINCREMENT is a keyword used for auto incrementing a value of a field in the table. Summary The AUTOINCREMENT keyword imposes extra CPU, memory, disk space, and disk I/O overhead and should be avoided if not strictly needed. I looked around and saw AUTOINCREMENT on this page but that did not work either. I get a sqlite error with the syntax below. If two people are inserting at the same time, as long as they are using different cursors, cursor.lastrowid will return the id for the last row that cursor inserted: cursor.execute('INSERT INTO foo (username, password) VALUES (?,?)',Ĭursor2.execute('INSERT INTO foo (username, password) VALUES (?,?)',Ĭursor.execute('INSERT INTO foo (id,username, password) VALUES (?,?,?)', Explanation In the above syntax, we create a table statement to use the AUTOINCREMENT property of SQLite, here we use different parameters as follows. The general rule for all insert/update defaults is that they only take effect if no value for a particular column is passed as an execute () parameter otherwise, the given value is used.
